When Cosette is arrested by police inspector Javert, Monsieur Madeleine happens to pass by and pities Fantine. He orders the inspector to set her free. Fantine then begs Valjean to find her daughter Cosette. Meanwhile, Javert is also on the lookout for the criminal Jean Valjean, the man now known as Monsieur Madeleine, who also happened to order him to let Fantine free.
Les Miserables is the musical adaptation of the 1862 novel by Victor Hugo. The stage adaptation by Alain Boubil and Claude-Michel Schönberg first premiered in Paris in 1980.
